National Grid cancels alert but UK power strains remain:
Concerns about the strain being placed on the UK's power transmission infrastructure remain despite the cancellation of the National Grid's inadequate system margin notice. The warning about the lack of capacity on the electricity network was issued on July 18 looking ahead to the following day, but National Grid subsequently canceled the notice early on July 19, Platts reports. The current heatwave that is sweeping the UK has led to a spike in demand for electricity, largely driven by air conditioning use. In addition, a number of the country's generating fleet have either been offline or reduced in output. This has led to fears that the conditions of the summer peak are mirroring those of peak demand periods in winter, when generators and network operators are more used to tight capacity issues. National Grid, which manages the network and is responsible for maintaining balance and supply, was forced to buy 793MW of power from an expensive oil-fired plant run by RWE at GBP449 per megawatt hour to cover the middle of the day on July 19. 24.7.06
