Ireland-based energy supplier Energia has been awarded a 2.4 million contract with Ireland-based grocery distributor Musgrave Group, through which it will provide 12 Musgrave sites throughout Ireland with ‘green’ electricity. According to Energia, a subsidiary of Veridian Group, the deal involves fulfilling an electricity requirement of approximately 22,000,000kWh, and will save about 110,000 tones of CO2 and other harmful emissions from entering the atmosphere, equivalent to removing over 30,000 cars from Irish roads. Energia said that among the Musgrave sites to which it will supply green power are two major facilities in Cork, including its group headquarters, two sites in Dublin, one in Galway and Musgrave’s distribution center in Kilcock, County Meath. Energia commented that Musgrave is the only wholesale and retail food distributor in Ireland to operate an environmental policy committing to measure environmental impact and to report results for company divisions and its independent franchise stores. John Curran, Musgrave environmental executive, commented: “Our aim is to significantly reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from our buildings by focusing on energy management initiatives and the use of energy efficiency technology.” He added: “In addition to green power deals which reduce environmental impact, we have targeted a 4% reduction in electricity usage throughout our building stock and are making strong progress towards our reduction goals.” Energia already supplies power to 500 Musgrave SuperValu and Centra stores nationwide, including power generated from renewable resources.
