Why You Should Get An Electricity Smart Meter

Everyone who has ever had an electricity supply in their home or office knows what a traditional electricity meter is and what it does.  You may have probably never even given much thought to what else it can do, apart from providing you with an accurate count of all the power you’ve consumed.   However, if you think that that’s where the evolution of technology stops with respect to meters, think again.

A new device called a Smart Meter has already been introduced in to the UK market.  As the name suggests, it’s a smart meter – in other words, it is capable of providing you with a lot more information about your power consumption than just whole numbers.

It can provide you with approximate figures for the cost and CO2 emissions, and it can get you a comparison of your power consumption based on a stipulated time frame such as daily, weekly or monthly.   Therefore, not only can you see how much power you’ve been using, but also figure out when your maximum usage is and what to do, to reduce it.

Smart meter is a new generation meter, capable of exchanging data with your electricity supplier.  When it is installed, it measures your energy consumption in short time spans such as 30-minutes and transmits that data via a wireless link to the supplier in real time (or as close to it as possible).  It also informs you of the price charged at a particular time depending on whether you’re in peak or off-peak hours.  Additionally, some utility companies allow you to check your daily usage on the company’s website.

Sounds promising, doesn’t it?

To summarize, here’s a list of some of its key advantages:

  • More Precise Billing: Unlike the traditional meters that bill you based on power consumption estimates, the smart meter will provide billing information on the exact usage, and therefore result in more precise billing.
  • Track Your Usage: It will be possible to see your consumption on the device, the company’s website, or a different smart device capable of reading that data.
  • Flexible Tariffs: In the future, utility companies will be able to charge different prices at different times of the day to match demand. You will then be able to structure your usage to avoid the high billing that comes with using a lot of power during peak hours.
  • Better Interoperability: As per the plan of the government, the smart meters will be capable of communicating with more than one supplier based on who is authorised for it.  In such cases, the data received at the suppliers’ end will be more comprehensive and accurate, resulting in more accurate and efficient pricing models over the market.
  • Reduction of Carbon Emission: When more people decide to reduce their power consumption, the pressure on the power plants like the coal-fired ones will be reduced resulting in reduced carbon emissions and a cleaner environment.
