New smart electricity meters could cut the average family’s electricity or gas bill by £80 a year, a group of MPs said last night. The MPs, from all parties, are mounting a campaign to have the meters installed in every home. They would mean the end of estimated bills, and make it easier for businesses and individuals to calculate how much energy they were actually using. Liberal Democrat Business spokesman Lembit Opik, one of the MPs backing the move, says UK consumers could save £1.9bn in a year, as well as 5.6bn tonnes of CO2. Mr Opik said, “Rather than wasting time with unnecessary trials, the Government should get on with the job of rolling them out across the country now.” Doing it over 10 years was “far too long”, he said. “If used nationwide, these devices could significantly help to reduce Britain’s future domestic energy needs,” said Mr Opik. “That will save tons of carbon and tons of money. It’s a common sense solution.”
