Business utilities face pressure to cut fuel bills:
Pressure was today mounting on utility companies to cut their bills after it emerged that wholesale energy costs have fallen by as much as 30 per cent over the summer. The UK's biggest utilities, including Npower, British Gas and Powergen, have increased customers' bills twice this year, with the companies blaming the price hikes on higher gas costs. Last week, Npower said it would be imposing a third increase on October 1, raising gas bills by 17.2 per cent and electricity bills by 9.9 per cent. However, reports today said winter wholesale gas prices have fallen by a quarter - and electricity prices by 30 per cent - in the last four months. The falling wholesale costs will put pressure on energy firms that raised bills to plan price cuts for next year. Industry regulator Ofgem pointed out that there was generally a time lag of up to nine months before a rise or fall in wholesale prices was passed on to consumers. Business customers tend to negotiate their energy supply contracts with utility companies on an annual basis. Only those starting talks now are likely to benefit from the prices falls. A string of new import projects are expected to boost gas supplies in the UK, putting further downward pressure on prices. Furthermore, weather experts at investment banks are predicting a milder winter than last year. 13.9.06
