Energy Demand in 2025

biggest drivers for energy demand in 2025

PwC recently published results from its survey of executives at 750 UK businesses and 50 public sector organisations.

The survey examined their energy challenges, objectives, progress in energy efficiency and strategies to fund energy investment.

PwC highlighted that the number of respondents committed to net zero by 2030 had increased to 47% compared to 28% last year.

Regarding energy consumption, it found that for 89% of the respondents their total UK energy consumption had grown in the last 12 months, with 83% expecting their energy consumption to rise again in 2025.

34% of the organisations noted that adoption of energy intensive technologies – such as artificial intelligence, automation and electrification – was the main driver for expected higher energy demand, followed by business growth and expansion selected by 33%.

High capital costs were identified as the largest barrier to achieving progress against energy objectives and a self-reliant approach has led to businesses making the biggest progress on energy efficiency measures with low costs and quick returns.

Changing to LED lighting, agreeing a renewable energy supply agreement, and onsite solar were the most adopted solutions, with less progress made on solutions that are capital intensive or need deeper organisational change.
