Whether you are connecting a new site, replacing an ageing meter or upgrading to automatic reads, gas metering is one of those jobs that is simple in principle and fiddly in practice. Multiple parties, long lead times, and a supply that does not work until it is done.

Our expertise in business gas meter installation ensures that your project is handled efficiently and effectively.

Catalyst manages gas metering projects end to end, from single new connections to full AMR rollouts across multi-site estates, and makes sure the billing is right afterwards.

What We Handle

From a single meter exchange to an estate-wide programme.
New Gas Connections

Getting gas to a site that does not have it. We coordinate the transporter, the connection works and the meter installation, then get a supply contract in place.

Installations and Exchanges

Replacing a meter that is ageing, faulty or wrongly sized. An oversized meter costs you in standing charges, an undersized one constrains your site.

AMR Upgrades

Automatic Meter Reading removes manual reads and gives you actual consumption data instead of estimates. If your bills are routinely estimated, this is usually the fix.

Faulty and Disputed Meters

Sticking dials and drifting registers can bill you thousands. We have challenged meter faults where billed consumption bore no relation to actual usage, and got the readings corrected.

Removals and Disconnections

Decommissioning supply at sites you are leaving, so you are not billed for a meter you no longer use.

Multi-Site Programmes

Estate-wide exchange and AMR rollouts, chased site by site so the programme does not stall halfway through.

Why Gas Metering Goes Wrong

Nobody owns the whole chain, which is why jobs stall.

Metering sits between several parties who do not naturally talk to each other: the gas transporter, the meter asset manager, your supplier and you. The common failure modes we see:

> Estimated billing that compounds. No actual read for months, then a large catch-up bill.

> Wrong meter for the site. Sizing based on an assumption rather than real consumption data.

> Faults nobody catches. A meter under-reading looks like good news until the correction arrives.

> Exchange programmes that drift. Multi-site rollouts stall because no one is chasing each individual site.

We hold the chain together, chase the parties, and keep the programme moving.

What a Gas Meter Project Involves

    > Establish what is there. MPRN, meter type, size, age and current reads. Not sure of yours? See what an MPRN is.

    > Confirm what you need. Sizing driven by real consumption data, not guesswork, so you do not overpay on standing charges.

    > Coordinate the parties. Transporter, meter asset manager and supplier.

    > Schedule the work. Around your operation, not theirs.

    > Verify afterwards. Confirm the new meter is registered, reading and billing correctly. This step is skipped more often than you would think, and it is where problems start.

    Metering and Your Gas Bill

Metering is not just an engineering job, it is a billing one.

    Your meter determines:

    > Your standing charge, partly driven by meter size and type.

    > Whether you are billed on actuals or estimates. An AMR meter ends estimated billing.

    > Whether you can analyse your usage at all. Half-hourly and AMR data is what makes proper consumption analysis possible.

    > Whether your procurement is based on real numbers. Accurate usage means accurate quotes.

Which is why metering and procurement belong together. Sorting your meter is often the first step to sorting your rates. See business gas prices once your data is right, or get a gas quote.

    Business Gas Meter FAQs

How long does a new business gas connection take?

It varies considerably by site and transporter, from weeks to several months for complex connections. Starting early is the single best thing you can do.

    Who owns my gas meter?

Usually a Meter Asset Manager rather than your supplier or you, which is part of why changes involve several parties.

Do I need a new meter to switch supplier?

No. Switching supplier is a billing change and your meter stays exactly as it is.

    What is an AMR meter?

Automatic Meter Reading. It sends reads remotely, so you are billed on actual consumption instead of estimates and you get usable consumption data.

My gas bills are always estimated, can that be fixed?

Yes, usually with an AMR upgrade or by getting actual reads established. Persistent estimation is a solvable problem, not something you have to live with.

I think my gas meter is reading incorrectly, what can I do?

Meter faults are more common than people assume and can be challenged with evidence. Usage data that contradicts the billed consumption is the basis of a challenge, and we have done exactly this for clients.
