Business Gas Suppliers

The Suppliers We Tender Across

Not one price from one company. A genuine market tender.

There are more business gas suppliers in the UK than most businesses realise, and the differences between them go well beyond price. Some specialise in large industrial users, some in micro businesses. Some price aggressively but administer poorly. Some will quote your meter today and not tomorrow.

This guide explains the landscape and how to choose.

The UK Business Gas Market

Supply in Great Britain is fully deregulated. The gas is identical whoever you buy from. What differs is price, structure, service, and who they want as a customer.
Large Established Suppliers

Household names with big SME books. Familiar and generally reliable administratively, but not always the sharpest on price. They compete for volume and brand recognition.

Business Specialists

Business-only suppliers, often keener on price and more flexible on structure, particularly for mid-market and larger users. Less familiar, which is precisely why they get overlooked.

Industrial and Flexible

Aimed at larger consumers, offering flexible and pass-through structures rather than simple fixed deals. Relevant if you want to manage market risk rather than just fix a price.

Not Every Supplier Wants Your Meter

This is the part nobody tells you: suppliers choose customers too.

At any moment, a supplier’s appetite depends on their existing book, their hedging position, their view on risk, and your credit profile. A supplier who priced brilliantly for your neighbour last month may decline your meter this month, or price it deliberately high to avoid winning it.

That is the practical reason a tender beats a single quote. You are not just finding the lowest number, you are finding who actually wants your business today. That changes constantly.

How to Choose a Business Gas Supplier

Price matters most, but it is not the only thing that will cost you.

> Price and structure. Compare on all-in p/kWh, not headline unit rates. See business gas rates for the method.

> Billing accuracy. A supplier that bills on estimates or gets reads wrong will cost you time and money regardless of the rate.

> Contract terms. Renewal windows, termination requirements and what happens at the end. The terms determine whether you keep control or drift onto out-of-contract rates.

> Credit requirements. Some suppliers want deposits or credit checks that others do not.

> Service and resolution. When a bill is wrong or a meter faults, how hard is it to get fixed? Invisible when you sign, very visible later.

> Appetite for your profile. A supplier who specialises in your size and sector will usually price you better than one who does not.

Does the Supplier Affect the Gas Itself?

No. The gas in your pipe is the same regardless of who bills you, and your supply is unaffected by switching. There is no engineer visit, no downtime, and no change to your meter. See switching business gas.

The exception is green gas. Some suppliers offer contracts matched with biomethane or green certificates. The molecules are the same, but the accounting differs, which matters if you have sustainability reporting obligations.

Why We Do Not Name a Best Supplier

Because there is not one, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

The best supplier for a 15,000 kWh office in Kent is not the best supplier for a 2 GWh manufacturing site in Yorkshire, and neither will be the same next quarter. Supplier appetite moves constantly. That is the entire argument for tendering rather than loyalty.

What we do instead: put your actual meter in front of suppliers and let them compete for it.

    Business Gas Supplier FAQs

Who are the main business gas suppliers in the UK?

The market includes large established suppliers, business-only specialists and industrial suppliers offering flexible structures. Which are relevant to you depends on your size and profile. A specialist may serve a mid-market user far better than a household name.

Is business gas cheaper from certain suppliers?

Consistently, no. Supplier competitiveness moves with their book, their hedging position and their appetite for your profile. The supplier who is cheapest today may not be next quarter, which is why tendering beats loyalty.

Can I choose any business gas supplier?

Yes, the market is fully deregulated. Any licensed supplier can supply your meter, subject to their appetite and credit requirements.

Does switching supplier affect my gas supply?

No. It is purely a billing change. Same gas, same meter, same pipe.

Do I have to stay with the supplier who owns my meter?

Your meter is generally owned by a Meter Asset Manager rather than your supplier, so no.

What is the difference between a supplier and a broker?

A supplier sells you gas and can only quote their own price. A broker or consultancy tenders your meter across suppliers and, in our case, manages the account afterwards.
