Commercial Energy Birmingham

Catalyst has run business energy contracts from Birmingham since 2001. Our office is at Two Chamberlain Square in Paradise Circus, and a good share of the meters we manage sit within a few miles of it, from Jewellery Quarter workshops to distribution units on the edge of the city. This page is about what commercial energy actually costs a Birmingham business, and where the regional part of that bill comes from.

Two businesses with identical consumption can pay materially different amounts depending on where their meters sit. Roughly 40 to 60 per cent of a commercial electricity bill is not the energy itself. It is network and policy cost, and a large part of that is regional. A Birmingham electricity supply sits in the National Grid Electricity Distribution (West Midlands) area, the network formerly known as Western Power Distribution. You can see it on any bill: the MPAN begins with distributor number 14. For settlement the city is in GSP group _E, and for transmission charging it falls in TNUoS zone 08, Midlands.

Those three facts decide a real slice of your bill:

> DUoS (distribution use of system) is set by NGED West Midlands and differs from every other network region. Red, amber and green band timings and rates are regional.

> TNUoS (transmission network use of system) varies by zone. The Midlands sits mid-table, better than the south coast and worse than Scotland for demand charges.

> Capacity charges are billed against your agreed supply capacity in kVA, not what you actually use. Sites whose use has changed since the connection was agreed are often paying for capacity they will never draw.

On gas, Birmingham is in the West Midlands Local Distribution Zone, operated by Cadent. LDZ transportation is a distinct line on a business gas bill and is not the same here as in, say, the North West. Our guide to gas transportation charges sets out how NTS and LDZ costs build up.

None of this is a reason to pay more. It is a reason to check what is being passed through, because regional costs are exactly where a poorly built contract quietly loses money.

We tender across more than 30 suppliers rather than working from a single panel. For a Birmingham business that usually means:

> A market tender at renewal, with the whole cost stack itemised so you can see commodity separately from network, policy and supplier margin.

> A view on when to fix, not only who to fix with. The month you buy in often moves the number more than the supplier you pick, which is why we publish wholesale electricity prices daily.

> A check on agreed capacity and DUoS band exposure before renewal, because that is where West Midlands sites most often carry avoidable cost.

Business gas is quoted in pence per therm on the wholesale market but contracted in pence per kilowatt-hour. We track the market daily on our wholesale gas prices page, including what current levels mean per kWh once transportation, the Climate Change Levy and supplier margin are added. Two things we check for Birmingham gas users in particular:

> Whether the site is de minimis. A site using under 4,397 kWh a month pays VAT at 5 per cent and no Climate Change Levy. Smaller city-centre premises frequently qualify, and are frequently billed as though they do not.

> The LDZ and exit zone shown on the bill, so West Midlands transportation cost is itemised rather than buried in a single blended unit rate.

Many of the businesses we work with have a Birmingham head office and sites spread across the region or the country. That creates problems a single-site comparison never surfaces: contracts ending on different dates, several suppliers billing to different addresses, and no single view of what the portfolio costs.

How do I compare commercial energy suppliers in Birmingham?
Comparison sites quote a unit rate, which is only part of the cost. A proper comparison prices the whole stack, including West Midlands DUoS, TNUoS, capacity and levies, against your actual consumption profile.

Can I switch commercial energy supplier mid-contract?
Not usually without a termination cost, but you can almost always agree your next contract early and lock it in for a later start date. That is often where the saving is.

Are business energy prices different in Birmingham than elsewhere in the UK?
The wholesale element is national. The network and policy element is regional, so a Birmingham site and an equivalent site in another network area will pay different delivered rates.

Do you work with small businesses as well as large users?
Yes. Larger sites get flexible or basket purchasing. Smaller ones are usually better served by a well-timed fixed contract and a check that they are on the right VAT and CCL treatment.
