Following the Kyoto Conference in 1997, the UK government agreed to reduce carbon dioxide levels by 20% by 2010. The Climate Change Levy was introduced in April 2001 to help and encourage businesses to respond. As a manufacturer of finished aluminum castings for the automotive industry, the company is a high user of energy it was considered affected by the Climate Change Levy.
A Site Energy Audit was undertaken and related to production output to establish baseline energy efficiency values. A strategy was outlined which included procedures for the management of energy and the reduction of waste. Replacement of equipment and systems was recommended where technology improvements would contribute to energy efficiency.
