Switching business gas is not like switching at home. The timing rules are different, the windows are longer, and the cost of missing them is real. Get it right and you fix at a rate you chose. Get it wrong and your supplier chooses for you.

The Three States You Can Be In

Most business gas contracts let you agree your next deal up to 12 months ahead. Knowing which state you are in is the most valuable thing about your contract.
In Contract, In Your Window

The good position. You can tender the market and lock your next rate at a time of your choosing, rather than being a forced buyer.

Out of Contract

Your deal ended and nothing replaced it. You will be on an elevated out-of-contract rate, often dramatically more than a negotiated one. Every day here costs money.

On Deemed Rates

You moved into premises and started using gas without agreeing a contract. Deemed rates are typically the most expensive of all. Worth fixing immediately.

Why Timing Beats Haggling

The same meter, quoted a month apart, can price very differently.

Business gas is priced off the wholesale market, which moves daily. That is the honest case for using a consultancy rather than a comparison site: someone watching the curve on your behalf and telling you when to move, not just what today’s price is.

See our wholesale gas tracker for where the market sits today, and business gas rates for how your price is built.

How to Switch Business Gas

Six steps, and we handle most of them.

> Find your contract end date. It is on your bill or your contract. If you cannot find it, we can.

> Check your renewal window. Most business gas contracts open 6 to 12 months before your end date.

> Gather your details. MPRN, annual usage in kWh and contract end date. A recent bill has all three. See what an MPRN is.

> Tender the market. This is the part that saves money. One supplier gives you one price, tendering gives you a benchmark.

> Compare on all-in p/kWh. Not headline unit rates. See business gas rates for why this matters.

> Agree and switch. Your new supplier handles the transfer with the old one.

There is no interruption to your gas supply. Nothing physical changes, no engineer visits, no downtime. The gas in your pipe is identical. Only the billing relationship moves.

    Looking for Cheap Business Gas?

Honest answer: cheap is the wrong target.

The cheapest headline unit rate frequently is not the cheapest contract, because the standing charge and the term structure do a lot of the work.

In a real July 2026 quote we secured for a large user, the 36-month option had the lowest unit rate and the highest standing charge, and still came out cheapest all-in, by around £1,700 a year against the 12-month. A business chasing the lowest advertised number would have compared these wrongly.

What actually makes business gas cheaper:

    > Tendering the market rather than accepting a renewal quote.

    > Fixing at the right time, inside your window, with a view on the curve.

    > Comparing all-in, so you are not fooled by structure.

    > Never drifting out of contract, which undoes any saving instantly.

    Can I Switch Mid-Contract?

Usually you cannot exit early without penalty, but you almost certainly can agree your next contract now if you are inside your renewal window.

That is the bit most businesses miss. You do not have to wait until your contract ends to lock your next rate. Waiting until the last minute is exactly how businesses end up on out-of-contract rates.

    Switching Business Gas FAQs

Will my gas supply be interrupted when I switch?

No. Nothing physical changes, it is a billing transfer. No engineer, no downtime, and no change to your supply.

How long does a business gas switch take?

Typically a few weeks from agreement to transfer, though you can agree your rate months ahead if you are inside your renewal window.

Can I switch if I am still in contract?

You generally cannot leave early without penalty, but you can usually agree your next contract inside your renewal window, often up to 12 months before your end date.

What happens if my contract ends and I do nothing?

You will roll onto out-of-contract rates, which are typically far higher than anything you would negotiate. It is the most expensive way to buy gas.

    What are deemed rates?

The default rates applied when you use gas at premises without an agreed contract, usually after moving in. They are typically the most expensive rates available and worth replacing straight away.

Do I need a new meter to switch business gas?

No. Your existing meter stays exactly as it is.
