The Major Energy Users Council – Opinion Poll Results

I attended the Major Energy Users Council (MEUC) spring road show this week in Birmingham, and I thought I would share some of the interesting topics that were discussed during the day.  The event was hosted by Mr. Andrew Buckley the Director General of the MEUC and featured a range of leading energy experts from suppliers, consultant and customers.

Various topics on gas and electricity were discussed and debated during the day, with some very strong varying opinions on the direction that the UK energy market is taking.  One thing was clear though throughout the day, and that was that fact that both energy resources and government policy are having a detrimental effect on energy prices.

There were many varying opinions over most of the topics discussed and debated during the day, but it was clear that the current extreme volatility in energy prices was a major issue effecting UK business at the moment.

It was also clear that the general opinion of the delegates in the room was that both gas and electricity prices were set to rocket over the coming years, and the need for a clear vision on the UK energy policy was urgently needed before its to late.

After each of the topics discussed during the day, the delegates then voted on 4 related questions in real time and the results were displayed for further discussion.  It was clear from the answers that feelings were running high on some of the subjects and that urgent action is needed now to prevent further financial distress to the UK economy.

About the MEUC – The  Major Energy Users Council representatives the views and opinions from medium size and larger industrial, commercial and public sector organisations.  The Council represents the interests of its Members on various governmental, regulatory and supplier committees including the influential Business Energy Forum, run by the Department of Energy and Climate Change and chaired either by the Secretary of State or a Minister. The Major Energy Users Council Electricity Questions

The first question has a very clear answer and this is something that has been echoed now for a number of years and that’s the fact that in the future we may not have enough generation to support our needs.

The second question demonstrated that in general the thoughts were that electricity prices could rise between 25 and 100% over the coming years.

The carbon price support mechanism (CPSM) is an additional levy on fossil fuels used to generate electricity that will be introduced from 1st April 2013 and it was clear that the new scheme wasn’t welcomed at the event.

The main focus has been on achieving the best electricity price and not necessarily looking for a green energy contract.

The Major Energy Users Council Gas Questions

Looks like we have a real concern in the reliability of gas distribution in the UK at the moment.

A very strong opinion from the delegates that gas prices are going to rocket over the coming 5-years.

There are a lot of arguments over the development of shale gas in the UK, but looks like people are keen to explore and unlock the potential shale gas reserves in the UK.

Interpretable gas contracts are no longer available, but its clear that the delegates thought that they should be and would help manage the balance of supply, in difficult times.
