UK Energy and Commercial Gas Prices

Consumers Urged to Gain More Control over their Energy Bills.  A recent survey conducted by an independent energy consultancy company revealed that two-thirds of commercial gas and electricity customers have little or no idea of how much they are paying per unit of energy and how their bill is calculated.

The survey also revealed that customers have little trust on their current gas and electricity suppliers.  Such findings forced the Government to reiterate its commitment to force energy companies to be more transparent with billing.

From July, energy suppliers must start sending annual statements to customers.  Bills must be easy to understand and statements must clearly show the amount of energy used and contain a comprehensive breakdown of costs.

Such demands were made by Ofgem who regulates the electricity and gas market in the UK.  The regulator also wants energy suppliers to incite the use of smart meters so customers can accurately monitor their spendings and put an end to billing problems.

More than 80% of calls to energy companies relate to issues over estimated bills.  A smart meter can help reduce these complaints as it measures and records gas and electricity consumption precisely.  All data is then sent back to energy companies via the mobile phone network and stored online so customers can log into their account through their energy company’s website to view their daily usage and costs.

The survey findings coincide with market predictions from the independent price comparison website energyhelpline.com who is urging consumers to take a gamble by fixing their gas and electricity prices as the market is starting to show signs that electricity prices may start to rise again.

But energyhelpline.com Director Mark Todd suggests customers adopt a different strategy and opt for fixed internet tariffs and these fixed rates are registering their lowest level for 2 years.

Mark Todd exacts words were:

“The market seems to be bottoming out and there is a chance that next winter may see prices start to rise again.

Now could be a great time to opt for a fixed Internet tariff if customers want stability in their energy bills.  Fixed rates are at their lowest level for 2 years. They are still very, very good value compared to standard ones.  However, there are signs this may change soon so for some it will be question of taking the gamble now before it is too late.”

Now the million dollar question is:  What to go for smart meters or fixed internet tariffs?  My suggestion is that you consult your energy supplier or independent energy broker to discuss what option will suit your household best.

  7. We carried the article yesterday about Smart Meters and hopefully it will be the start of a useful discussion to spread the word.

In general I think the way that people look at energy and energy usage is changing.

For some I think the biggest change is to stop seeing ourselves as consumers of resources and to start viewing our energy consumption and generation as a bank account with no overdraft facility. Therefore if you take, you also have to give. Whether that is heating your home with a Zero Carbon Energy Tariff, or fitting solar panels to the roof to generate your own energy or indeed perpetual motion machines. The key point is to not take without giving. I think as more customers choose these options then the cost of production and acquisition will make them more affordable, which will therefore lead to further demand.

For others it is a very real issue about cost and so finding a good tariff is essential. The best tariff we found was Websaver7 from British Gas but others are available too.

After the winter we have just had it is important for everyone to make the best decisions they can.
